Meet Joanne, an exasperated mother with an estranged husband, a modern woman who is bored with her humdrum existence. What can she do to stop the monotony, wish away her troubles, pursue a new life? What Joanne does not know is that she is about to embark on a wondrous journey of self-discovery. Her journey will take her into other worlds, beyond her imagination. She will see things that she never thought possible. And, she will make peace with her own conscience and realise that the life she has left behind is far from humdrum. The only question is, “Will Joanne ever be able to return home?”
Jackie Hill’s first novel is a beautifully written work of literature. There are myriad novels written about journeys of self-discovery, but few have such an original concept as Hill’s. If I were to try and explain her novel’s premise, I would never do it justice, as it is utterly fantastical and yet, utterly brilliant. She has combined science-fiction with romantic drama in creating a novel that is a joy to read.
So, if you are the sort of person who lets trivial things get you down, and the world sometimes seems to be closing in on you, I would recommend Hill’s Arrangement of Atoms. It will lift your spirit and give you a fresh outlook on life. At the same time, this novel will remind you that it is never too late to change; if things do not go as planned, never be afraid to say, “So what!”
